Hugh
Jackman has been talking about his final appearance as mutant superhero
Wolverine in 2017’s third solo ‘X-Men’ spin-off movie, even teasing a couple of
potential details.
The
46-year-old Aussie actor briefly touched on the new film during an interview on
the Sydney Confidential podcast.
There
were a lot of calls for Victor Creed to come back,” he said, referring to
Wolverine’s long-time nemesis Sabretooth, who was the first character to clash
with Jackman’s hero in the very first ‘X-Men’ film back in 2000.
To
date Sabretooth has been portrayed by Tyler Mane in that first film and by Live
Schreiber in the first Wolverine spin-off in 2009 (which has been struck from
history if you ask Fox).
“I
must admit I was quite heartened by a number of people saying please don’t make
it the last,” Jackman continued, “But I’m really excited about this last one,
and if you’re a comic book fan, then the words ‘berserker rage’ came up a lot,
so if you know Wolverine, you’ll understand.”
The
character’s tendency to fly into a “berserker rage” is a one of the facets of
Wolverine that hasn’t been seen often in the film series due to their largely
family-friendly nature. As you may assume, Wolverine’s berserker rage sees the
near-indestructible mutant enter a frenzy of violence when he’s adequately
pissed off.
The
notable big screen appearance of this occurred in 2004’s ‘X2’ when General
Stryker’s forces attacked Charles Xavier’s mansion and Wolverine was trying to
rescue and save the school’s children.
Were
this final ‘Wolverine’ to better showcase the character’s violent side it would
be a fan-pleasing move, and after so long with the character (15 years and
seven appearances so far) the finale might be time to give the people what they
want.
What
the people want also includes a classic Wolverine costume. One rumour, which
has suggested the film might adapt the Old Man Logan run of comics would also
please many a fan. ‘Wolverine 3’s second cast member Patrick Stewart hinted
that this was the case as well.
James
Mangold is returning from the well-regarded ‘The Wolverine’ to direct once
again, with Michael Green penning the script. The film is set for release on 2
March 2017, so will enter production either later this year or early next.
