(NBC News) Tech giants
are getting in on the news game. Google recently announced an open source tool
to speed up mobile news offerings.
“They’re creating the
technology to make it faster for articles to load, opening that technology up
to other companies in the hopes that they will use that as well,” explains
RE/CODE’s social media editor Kurt Wagner.

Apple’s latest iOS has
also incorporated a news app and social media is gaining relevance as a news
source.
The Pew Research Center
reports 63 percent of people on Twitter and Facebook say they use social
networks to stay informed. Facebook began testing “instant articles” in May
with the goal to change that. It allows some news organizations to upload
content directly to the site. Twitter is showcasing its most “tweeted about”
topics with its new “Moments” tab. Snapchat is also delivering news
organization content with its new “Discover” feature.
“This is already a
great opportunity that a lot of publishers are jumping at because they like the
audience that Snapchat has, which is typically young, mobile friendly
millennials,” says Wagner.
The potential of
millions of views from millennials is a win for news content makers, the tech
giants.
