Supernatural Staffordshire: Man's out-of-body experience

ASTRAL projection, or out-of-body experiences, are a fascinating concept.

Some people believe that through meditation and other techniques a person has the ability to separate their physical and 'astral' body.

Others believe this is, in fact, a way of allowing our 'soul' to journey away from our physical self and to travel, in an instant, through time and space to locations even hundreds or thousands of miles away.

There are many intriguing stories of wondrous and bizarre cases of OBE (out-of-body experiences) that are well worth researching, if you are interested in the paranormal.

Although there are tales dating back from the beginning of time and from every continent on the planet this week's story comes from much closer to home - Hill Chorlton, near Newcastle-under-Lyme, to be exact.

Tim had lived in the rural area of for many years and enjoyed his smallholding where he had a few animals - chicken, sheep, cattle and pigs.

He shared the smallholding with his wife and their border collie "Bo".

Bo was an exceptionally intelligent dog and showed such control and obedience that it always made Tim proud.

Every morning Tim would wake early and tend to the few animals he kept - with Bo by his side.

Tim was in his early sixties and, although he'd had health issues for a number of years he still liked to keep active.

This, combined with his love for the outdoors, made his rural existence perfect.

Tim had recently been diagnosed with sleep apnoea - a disorder where the narrowing of the airway causes the sufferer to have paused or laboured breathing during sleep.

This meant that Tim also snored quite loudly at times. Due to the noise it had been agreed that he would spend a couple of nights a week in the spare room to allow his poor wife the chance of a good night's sleep.

They normally slept apart on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

On June 19 this year, Tim gave his wife a hug and a kiss and went off to the spare room to try to get some sleep.

Eventually they both dropped off in their separate rooms and the house was silent.

Tim's wife awoke at approximately 6.30am - having heard a noise downstairs.

She climbed out of bed and peered out of the bedroom window overlooking the rear of the house.

She could see her husband walking towards the animals.

Bo was with him and all seemed well.

She claims she watched him for a few minutes until he disappeared into the distance behind one of the outbuildings.

Lying back in bed and unable to get back off to sleep she decided to make use of the beautiful morning and head downstairs to make breakfast for them both.

On the way past the spare room she decided to pop in and make the bed.

As she walked in she stopped dead in her tracks: Lying there, fast asleep was her husband.

So who had she seen walking outside with Bo? It had looked exactly like Tim.

She shook her husband to wake him and Tim sat bolt upright.

She explained that she had witnessed him and Bo leaving the house and watched them for a good few minutes.

What was just as astounding was that Tim claimed he had done just that.

'I remember waking up and leaving the bedroom.

Bo came with me and we left the door to the rear of the house.

We had just gone around the back of one of the outbuildings where we housed the chickens.

I had only been there a few minutes when I felt a sudden thud in my chest and when I looked where I was I was gobsmacked to find myself back in my bed,' Tim told me.

'I will never understand how I remember vividly leaving the house and my wife saw me go when it would seem my body never left the bed,' he said.

This is not the first and most certainly won't be last account of astral projection or OBE.

It may seem strange but for Tim and his wife it was all too real.

So, the next time you see someone who seems out of place, perhaps you should ask yourself: Are they really there?
